Design & Height Requirements
You can install almost all common types of fence in Farmington such as; vinyl, wood, chain link, aluminum, and composite fences. You are also allowed to build just about any common fence design such as privacy fences, picket fences, and ornamental fencing. The only major thing to remember is that fences installed in a backyard (not past the rear corners of the house) can be a maximum of 6′-2″ in height and any fence installed along the side of the house (beyond the rear corners of the house) can only be a maximum of 4-ft tall.
No fence in Farmington may include barbed wire, razor ribbon, electrical charges or any other sharp/electric features. The only exception to this is a low voltage invisible dog fence.
The finished/smooth side of all fences installed in Farmington must face outward toward your adjacent neighbor(s). This means that all of the posts and rails must be installed on your side of the fence and that the finished side of the fence must face towards your neighbors yard.
Location Requirements
One big pain in the rear end with Farmington is their ordinance on having two fences installed alongside each other. If there is an existing fence on your shared property line (let’s say a chain link fence) and you want to install a new fence (let’s say a privacy fence) without removing the existing fence, your new fence must be installed at least 10-ft away from the existing fence. You can, of course, remove the old fence and install the new privacy fence on the shared property line. Just be sure to be friendly with your neighbor so they do not give you a hard time about it.
Fences can be installed along the rear property lines and along the side property lines, up to the front corners of the house. No fence can extend beyond the front corners of your house. Also remember that no fence on the sides of the house can be taller than 4-ft tall.
Fence Repairs in Farmington Michigan
If you need to do a fence repair in Farmington, you do not have to obtain a permit unless you will be doing a major repair (replacing a good portion of your total fence) or unless you are changing the type, style, height, color, etc. of your existing fence during the repair.
If you wish to change anything about your fence during the repair, or if you wish to repair a large portion of the total fence, a permit will first need to be obtained.

Before you can install a fence in the city of Farmington, a permit must first be obtained. In order to obtain a fence permit you must gather all of the required documents (listed below) and submit them to the city office for review. Permits are typically reviewed and approved -or denied- within one (1) week.
