Design and Height Requirements
Fences in Berkley can be installed using any common type of fence including: vinyl, wood, chain link, aluminum and composite products.
The maximum height for a fence in Berkley is 6 feet tall unless you live adjacent to some commercial properties, in which case you may be able to have a maximum fence height of 8 feet tall.
All fences must be installed with the finished side of the fence facing adjacent neighbors. This simply means the posts and rails of the fence must be on your side of the fence, not your neighbors.
Location Requirements
No fence in the city of Berkley can extend forward beyond the front corners of your house/building. If you live on a corner lot and want a fence installed in the side yard (facing a side street), it must be positioned at least 12 inches away from any public sidewalk.
Any fence installed alongside an existing fence should have around a 4” bottom gap to allow ground maintenance and prevent over growth of weeds between the two fences.
If your fence is being installed alongside a neighboring driveway, the fence must be a minimum of 24 inches away from the neighbors driveway.
Fence Repairs in Berkley Michigan
If you need your existing fence repaired in the city of Berkley, you may do so without obtaining a permit if the fence being repaired does not make up more than 25% of the total fenced in area.
For Example: if your total length of your fence is 100 feet and you only need to repair 20 feet of the fence, no permit is needed. However, if you are “repairing” 60 feet of the fence, this is considered a replacement and will require a fence permit.
